[People News] Qin Siyue, a 19-year-old professional Go player known as a "genius female player," was caught sneaking a phone into a competition last year and using an artificial intelligence (AI) program to cheat. As a result, she has been banned from competition for eight years and stripped of her professional ranking.
According to a report by Radio Free Asia, the Chinese Weiqi Association issued an announcement on Wednesday (the 26th), stating that on December 15 of last year, during the ninth round of the Women's Individual National Go Championship, Qin Siyue was subjected to a routine check by referees. She was found carrying a mobile phone and using an AI program on it. Qin was immediately disqualified from the match, and an analysis of her game records showed that her moves had a 73% match rate with AI-generated strategies.
In the past year, the winning rate has risen to 70%
Over the last year, Qin Siyue's winning rate has increased from over 30% to 70%. In November of last year, during the 'Wu Qingyuan Cup' World Women's Go Championship, Qin Siyue defeated several strong competitors, including Zhan Lumin, to advance to the top 16. However, her recent cheating revelation has cast doubt on her impressive achievements.
According to the report, after reviewing the video footage from the competition day and hearing testimonies from judges, players, and staff, it was confirmed that Qin Siyue entered the venue early in the morning to hide a mobile phone and cheated during the match, showing a blatant disregard for competition rules. When questioned about the facts, she attempted to conceal her actions, which is considered a serious offense.
Taking into account the nature of the violations and the attitude of the individual involved, the Discipline and Ethics Working Committee of the Chinese Go Association has decided to revoke Qin Siyue's professional rank, annul her results in the 2024 National Go Championship (individual), and ban her from participating in all Go competitions and activities organized or authorized by the Chinese Go Association and its member units for a period of 8 years.
In 2020, at just 14 years old, Qin Siyue participated in the National Go Qualification Tournament held in Wuxi, successfully advancing to the professional first rank, making her one of the few young professional players. In November 2022, she was selected for the Shanghai Qingyi Youth Team for the National Go Championship (team). By June of last year, she had been promoted to professional second rank, and prior to competing in the National Go Championship, she had already achieved professional third rank.
